After Beck rids himself of the last dragon stone, his luck and reasoning vanish: Beck demolishes a museum, plunges three school buses into a lake, and is almost killed by his crazed father, a ninja-like cactus, and kamikaze trees. In the midst of this, Beck and Kate discover a secret elevator that descends beneath the Pillage manor to a crystal cave. All these events cause Beck to plant the last dragon stone in the cavern. Unlike times before, Beck keeps his actions hidden from everyone, including Kate. When the stone hatches and three dragons appear, Beck supports their pillaging tendencies. But when the dragons threaten Kate, Beck realizes he must destroy them to save Kate’s life and end the curse.
Ambush is a work of genius mixing fantasy, suspense, adventure, and madness to produce an adrenaline-pumping read. At the beginning of the book, Beck is a fairly reliable narrator harboring a small rebellious streak. As the story progresses, Beck loses touch with reality and cuts ties with all humanity. Readers witness the train-wreck of Beck’s mind as his family’s curse consumes him. The only thing that pulls Beck from the curse’s strangling hold is his love for Kate and his longing for a real father. As in Choke, Skye plants clues throughout the book on how the king dragon can be destroyed. When readers follow the clues, they too can uncover the secret message. No fans of fantasy fiction should skip this remarkable young adult read.
