Have you ever heard of a ten-foot-tall bird that could kill with one blow from its massive beak? Or an ancient snake that was forty-eight feet long? From the beginning of time there have been lethal, apex predators at the top of their food chains that ruled the time and place in which they lived. Apex Predators provides an introductory description of the most deadly predators from the past and the present. The book describes twenty-four predators both ancient and modern by providing readers with details on where they lived, how big they were, and how and what they killed. From great white sharks to tyrannosaurus rex, this book leaves readers wondering more about ancient and modern predators.
Steve Jenkins has written several other informational books about animals that are geared to children. Apex Predators contains a bibliography to show the author’s authority and to give readers a way to find more information. The illustrations in the book are torn- and cut-paper collage; they are simple, but beautifully show the animals of the past and present day. Each page also includes a drawing done to scale of the animal and an adult human. The pictures are engaging for younger readers, and the descriptions are concise and comprehensible for older readers. Apex Predators introduces children to unfamiliar predators of the past and present in an enlightening, and engaging manner.
