This book begins with a simple question posed from mother to daughter: “Do you remember when we planted those flower bulbs together?” What follows is not a discussion on gardening, but rather a reminiscent recollection of their tender memories together. The story eventually moves forward from that day of planting, and the focus shifts from the flowers to the child. The mother considers the time that has passed since then, the way her daughter has grown, and the memories they created together. The story finally comes full circle, returning to the flower bulbs and their upward progress, concluding with a beautiful picture of flowers in full bloom.
The endearing text and the brilliant illustrations in this book create a rich reading experience for its audience. The comparison between growing flowers and raising children is very clear and yet subtle enough to not come off as preachy or cheesy. Bright and clear drawings are creatively placed on each page in different but easy-to-find places, and these drawings perfectly coincide with and complement the corresponding text. The author captures the day of planting in vivid and delightful detail. Ultimately, it’s a heartwarming story that will touch the hearts of parents, entertain young readers, and act as a springboard for parent-child conversations about growing up and savoring memories together.
