Blue Ethel is a picture book about an old, fat, black and white cat. Ethel spends her time in the lazy, laid back way that cats do. Until one day, she rolls around on the sidewalk and turns blue! At first she is sad, but the next day she sees Fluffy, who has turned pink. He and Ethel begin to do their everyday activities together and roll on the sidewalk chalk to become colorful. Ethel is occasionally black and white, but some days other colors catch her fancy.
Blue Ethel is a whimsical story that exists purely for enjoyment. It can teach children to accept who they are and accept changes, but this is a very loose lesson of self-confidence within the story. The illustrations are as much a part of the story as the words. While the cats are loosely cat shaped, their faces have a humanoid appearance in some illustrations. The illustrations are a mix of pen and watercolor, which adds to the playful nature of the story.
