Bowling is a fun game to learn! You need to know how to do some math to keep score. You get one point for each of the 10 pins you knock over. If you knock them all over on the first try then you get a strike, "add the points for the next two rolls".. If you get them all on your second try, a spare and you "add the points for the next roll".
The first two pages of the book are heavily laden with extraneous and complex material. The dimensions of bowling lanes, and unnecessary rules bog down this otherwise easy read. The math problems only include addition/subtraction and so long as you don't get caught up trying to explain how to "add the points for the next two rolls" it should be fine for an introduction to word problems. The idea behind the series is great, teaching kids how to use math in real life and especially in the context of a game is awesome; however, the author reached beyond the mark.
