Seven fabulous fairy tales told with a twist or two. Snow White earns her keep cooking and cleaning for some ornery dwarfs, an amphibious prince finds his way to the dining table, foolishness and pride waste three wonderful wishes, kindness is a pearl and selfishness is grotesque, Little Red finds her way through a brutal storm to her grandmother's house, a young man discovers that goodness of heart is as important as education, and Hansel and Gretel find their way through trouble and into the great wide world. These are familiar stories crafted by a new teller of tales.
Each story is told in a simple, straight forward fashion unadorned by flowery detail. The characters are practical people with simple traits and direct actions, "the better to tell the moral of the tale, my dear". The author creates her own twist in each tale by adding a little extra here and there. The stories remain true to the familiar tales but have been adapted in a fresh and personal fashion. The author's practicality comes through very strongly. This is a quick enjoyable read that leaves room for personal embellishment in its simplicity.
