There are two kinds of dogs in the world: those that are smart and those that are dumb. Calpurnia Tate happens to have a dog that is lovable but dumb. You would think after his first run-in with a porcupine, Calpurnia’s dog Ajax would have learned his lesson. But a second, more deadly encounter with a porcupine forces Calpurnia to act quickly to save the life of her beloved dog.
Calpurnia Tate, Girl Vet #4: A Prickly Problem tells the story of a young girl in turn-of-the-century Texas who has a deep love of animals. This story has themes of bravery, kindness, and learning from mistakes. Calpurnia learns in this installment of her story that being kind makes us feel good, and being brave means acting quickly even when it is hard. This story is a great chapter book for young readers, but would also be enjoyed as a read-aloud for younger students.
