Sam the submissive pig and Zoey the rambunctious chicken are ready for a winter adventure. They want to find the North Pole! Clara the cow suggests that they wear mittens because it's so cold. Sam and Zoey wear them as hats instead of wearing them on their hands. First, they slip under a fence, but yarn from Sam's mitten unknowingly gets caught in the fence while he keeps walking. They find a scarecrow that appears to these young animals to be a yeti. He also appears to be "on the north pole". When they decide to start the long trek home, Zoey commends Sam for leaving his string behind because they know exactly how to get back! They are a good team of arctic explorers and they make it home in time to have some hot cocoa.
Chicken in Mittens is an I Can Read! level one book. It is also a guided reading level one book, which is relatively high to be considered a "beginning reader" book. The title is a little bit misleading because the chicken named Zoey in this book only ever wears one mitten, but readers will laugh because she wears the mitten on her head! The misconception that the north pole is actually a pole sticking out of the ground, is played with in this book. The illustrations are cute and cover most of each page. This tale about talking animals will engage young readers as they read themselves or even younger readers as they are read to by an adult.
