Van Uoc Phan makes a wish that her long time crush, Billy Gardiner, would notice her for once. She didn’t think her wish would come true, but it does! As Van Uoc gets to know Billy better she starts to discover things about herself. She doesn't want to be what everyone expects her to be. She wants to be an artist and a normal girl with a cute boyfriend; she wants to have parents who understand her and let her be the kid for once. Van decides to take back her wish and begins to realize she can do anything she wants. She can even be an artist if she wants to be! It also turns out that Billy liked her because he wanted to and not because she wished it, making everything perfect in the end.

Wood tells a great story of self-discovery and the twists and turns along the road. The author accurately describes the feelings of an immigrant or outsider. Van Uoc is not from Australia, automatically making her very different from everyone else. She doesn't come from money, have a big house, or have fancy clothes. She's just a normal girl with normal emotions dealing with growing up and preparing for the future. A great book for those acclimating to a new culture or environment, Cloudwish can help readers sort through their feelings and see from a different perspective. Although this is a great book to help deal with change, there are a few aspects that are a bit confusing. Van Uoc’s sentences seem fragmented, filling her voice with incomplete thoughts and making her ideas difficult to follow at times. Some chapters are abrupt and leave out details that would help enhance and explain what is going on. Overall, a good book to read with an open mind.
