Columbus Day is an informational text that helps young students learn the background about the holiday we call Columbus Day. Christopher Columbus was an explorer born in Italy. He was commissioned to find new routes to China and Italy. In 1492, he arrived in America and every year on the second Monday in October we celebrate that monumental event. He led the way for many Europeans to come to America. Franklin D. Roosevelt is the president who made Columbus Day a national holiday.
This is a great book to introduce children to non-fiction books and teach them how to navigate the text through the table of contents, glossary, and index. Most schools normally have school on Columbus Day, so this would be a great book for teachers to have on hand and read to young students on Columbus Day each year. There are one to two simple sentences per page spread and each page spread includes large picture of famous paintings, monuments of Christopher Columbus, and pictures of his ships. Children may not pick this book up for their own enjoyment, but it is great for an educational read-aloud.
