Nikki Kill is trying to discover who killed her half sister, what the Hollis family is really up to, and who is responsible for her mother's death. With the help of Detective Martinez and her synesthesia, an ability that blends her senses and helps her remember important facts, Nikki is able to put the clues together and discover the truth. Unfortunately, it comes at a terrible price. If Nikki doesn't find evidence soon, she'll end up going to jail instead of the real culprit. With many dangerous scenarios along the way, including a break in and the betrayal of her boyfriend, Nikki is able prove her innocence, but Detective Martinez is severely injured in a hit and run. Now, Nikki's on the hunt for the Detective's assailant and her mother's murderer.
This is a story full of mystery and suspense. Every chapter leaves the reader hanging by a thread, forcing them to read on and satisfy their curiosity to what happened. The author flushes out her synesthesia concept well, allowing readers to immerse themselves in Nikki's world and experiences. Although this is the second book in the Nikki Kill series, it can stand alone. The book gives enough detail from the previous novel that helps explain what is going on, but still tell it's own story. Brown does a great job of helping Nikki grow and mature. Nikki may still be reckless by the end, but she sees the importance of preparing and having a plan. Readers and Nikki learn that it is important to move forward in life and stop living in the past.
