Eloise doesn’t like winter; it’s too cold and too boring. She lives on the top floor of the Plaza Hotel with Nanny, who decides they need to get out, so they head on a date to the ice-skating rink. Eloise loves to skate, but she’s not very courteous of other skaters. She glides, spins, and jumps, until she falls and a nice policeman catches her! At the end, Nanny decides they need to leave to get hot chocolate.
Children in first and second grade who are beginning to read on their own will appreciate this book with its simple story, increased vocabulary, and longer sentences. Eloise, like many children, can quickly make the most of what seem at first to be negative circumstances, like the boring season of winter. Young readers or listeners will enjoy the humorous illustrations by Tammie Lyon.
