Twin sand sharks Flip and Fin are excited about their school's upcoming Joke Day. Flip is especially determined to perform his jokes onstage, and practices with everyone he meets in an attempt to find the perfect joke to tell to his classmates. When Joke Day finally arrives, Flip still hasn't decided on a joke, and worst of all, he realizes that standing in front of the entire school may be more intimidating than he thought! When his turn comes, Flip is so nervous he can barely speak. Luckily, his sidekick and brother Fin has his back!
Preschoolers will love the litany of undersea-themed jokes sprinkled throughout the story, and will appreciate the three pages at the back of the book devoted to marine jokes with clever punchlines. Adults may find the plot line dull and the pacing slow. The story does seem to end abruptly, and the subtitle seems unrelated to the topic of the book itself. Neil Numberman's bright watercolor illustrations mirror perfectly the humorous story line, however, and a glossary of facts about the fish which feature in the book as characters appears at the end of the book.
