Bear sends a note to her chipmunk friend Izzy, asking her to come to her home. Izzy knows that Bear never asks for anything unless it is important, so she starts off even though it is snowing. Soon the snow is too high for Izzy to get through, so she must find another way. One by one, friends pitch in to help, until at last they all arrive at Bear's den. Bear welcomes them in and reveals what was so important: she made a cake for Izzy's birthday! They all gather around the warm fire and enjoy a party. In the morning, Bear helps everyone to get home safely.
This is a great book about the importance of helping friends. When each of the animals hear that Bear has asked Izzy to come, none of them hesitate to join in the difficult journey through the chilling cold. They all persist to make sure that everyone makes it through. The ending is just right to reward the determination of these dedicated friends. The illustrations are colorful and the hues match either the chilling cold or the homey warmth required for each page. This is a great book for winter, but the friendly message is appropriate year-round.
