The Oyster is an icebreaker ship that has followed the same path for centuries. The crew is split into three warring tribes: officers, cooks, and engineers. Petrel is a tribeless orphan and an outcast. She survives by hiding in dark corners, stealing food, and talking to the rats, until one day a mysterious boy is discovered on an iceberg and brought on board. Petrel befriends the boy, but she doesn’t know that he is part of an evil plan to destroy the ship and its crew. Luckily, Petrel and the crew work together to save the ship.
Icebreaker is a dystopian novel written in a delightful, fairy tale-esque style. The dominant theme, the importance of identity and value, is supported by the main character. Petrel is a strong female protagonist with many admirable characteristics. However, she struggles with her identity. She is isolated from the crew and labeled the 'Nothing Girl.' Eventually, Petrel discovers her identity, and she becomes a valuable member of the crew. Readers who enjoy dystopian novels, fairy tales, survival stories, action, or mysteries will enjoy this excellent novel.
