Angie knows that her mother would never lie to her, until her mother does. Angie knows that leaving her home will break her mother’s heart and does not think she can do it, until she does. When Angie turns sixteen, she finds out that her dad really did not die in a car accident and that she has an uncle, Justin. In a quest to find out who she is and where her roots are, she leaves home for L.A. to find her Uncle Justin. It is only by running away from everything she has ever known that she discovers who she really is.
Ava Dellaira does a beautiful job of weaving the stories of Marilyn and Angie together. Both women are on a journey to find out who they really are and both stories explore what it means to be a daughter and a mother. It is only by reading about Marilyn and her journey that the reader is able to get the entire scope of Angie’s journey as well. Dellaira has a lovely writing style that is filled with beautiful prose and imagery. While the book is lengthy, she creates a narrative that keeps the reader guessing and wondering what is going to happen and begs to be finished.
