Mrs. Jolly Bones is a quirky lady who does her chores quite differently than most. From laundry to gardening to a night in with her friends, her antics amuse and delight. She is assisted by many farm animals, including a cow, a goose, and a pig in performing her household duties. Take care, though--for if your child does become inspired by our dear Mrs. Jolly Bones, they may complete their chores as she does, which will result in a mess that in reality will probably not be as amusing as in the book.
This humorous, whimsical book has the ability to keep even the best guessers on their toes. Hanson writes the entire story in rhyme, making the sentences flow smoothly and sound appealing. Mrs. Jolly Bones is unpredictable and makes many unexpected decisions, which keeps the audience wondering and enjoying the ride. It’s perfect for teaching important skills such as sequencing, completing a task properly, and predictions. It’s sequential, with a different chore on each day of the week, which provides exposure for young readers to the format of a week. The illustrations are detailed, yet easy to follow, and help the reader grasp the humor and playful tone of the story. It’s Monday, Mrs. Jolly Bones is the perfect book for preschool to second or third grade students, although it remains appropriate (and entertaining) for younger and older audiences.
