Four teens in detention discover an antiquated game system in a storage room. They each choose an avatar and find themselves sucked into the game, fighting for survival in the jungle. They soon discover their game-assigned strengths, weaknesses, and the mission--they must return a mystical stone to the stone jaguar who guards Jumanji. They stumble their way through various game levels and find that they can depend on each other as they advance toward the end. They grow in confidence and camaraderie and learn the value of personal sacrifice and teamwork. Together they complete the task and return to the real world, where they stay united despite their differences.
The acting of the adult characters in this movie is what makes it great. Even Dwayne 'the Rock' Johnson stays in character as an awkward teen geek, but all performances are consistent with teens trapped in adult bodies. Jack Black gives the outstanding performance, fraught with the occasionally questionable humor of a teen queen discovering the complexities of being a guy. He nailed it. The plot lags a bit in spots, but overall this is a wacky teen movie full of fun and ridiculous adventure. It is important to note that this is a teen film and is not appropriate for young or immature children.
