Captain Mouse builds a boat to take her brother his birthday present. Everything goes very smoothly at first, but then the wind picks up and it begins to rain. Big waves toss Captain Mouse's boat around. She manages to steer clear of a dark and dangerous cave only to crash into some rocks! Shipwrecked, Captain Mouse yells for help. Frog and Dragonfly hear her and bring materials for her new boat. Once the storm clears, Captain Mouse crosses the water and delivers her present and an exciting story to her brother.
This is such a fun and imaginative book. Captain Mouse's first boat is made from a walnut and her second boat from a cork with a penny rudder. After Captain Mouse has landed safely on the other side, the view rises and you can see that this grand adventure took place in a small puddle. The 'dark and dangerous cave' was actually an old can and Mouse only traveled about a foot. After the drama of the shipwreck and the storm, it all suddenly seems pretty amusing. The illustrations in the book are also excellent. They're expressive, dramatic, and capture the action of what is happening very well. Overall, a tremendous read!
