In this interactive picture vocabulary book, reader follow a family throughout their adventurous day and learn over 700 English and French words. Grand-père takes the children to many fun places, and they buy many interesting things together. Along the way, readers answer questions like “what kind of home would you like to live in?” by using picture captions in French and English to respond. Readers can also select from dozens of emotions to explain how they are feeling: curieux or curious, for example. With a variety of food names, animal species, weather terms, and job titles, readers can talk about their day in two languages. Afterwards, readers can cuddle into bed at night for a bonne nuit!
This book's inquisitive story line and colorful illustrations depict familiar home and community settings, working to support both French and English vocabulary development. However, while the book appears to be meant for beginning French speakers, readers are left without a pronunciation guide. The sentence structure of the simple story line is more complicated than a beginning French grammar textbook. The book does not have a dual-language glossary, which would have been helpful to alphabetize new words for quick reference. Because of these difficulties, the book would be best as a teaching tool by parents who are bilingual or who have studied several levels of French, rather than by novices seeking to learn along with their child.
