A tiny red bird is almost ready to fly away. Her mother teaches her how to fly on the wind, but the little bird wonders which direction she should fly: north, south, east, or west? She flies north, but it is too cold. She flies south, but it is too hot! She flies west, but misses her home in the east. So she flies back home to the east.
Margaret Wise Brown, also the author of Goodnight Moon, captures the desire to leave the nest and explore, and the contradictory desire for home. She shows that it's okay to go off on your own because you'll always find your way back home. Greg Pizzoli's illustrations are exceptional and composed of simple shapes with curving lines and solid colors that give the book a mid-century style. The subtle texturing adds depth to the images as well. Overall, an excellent book about growing up!
