As fugitives of the law, Eva and Addie are safe . . . for now. Although they have to stay indoors to remain unrecognized, they are still trying to find the other children that were taken from the hospital. They find other souls like them and come up with a plan to expose the corrupted government and their maltreatment of the hybrid population. Addie and Eva start to question how far they are willing to go for the hybrid cause when they discover that their friends are planning on blowing up a hospital with innocent people inside it. Eva and Addie use a last minute plan to save everyone, but their friends are captured by the government in the process.
Zhang does a wonderful job telling the story of two girls trying to find themselves and accept others. Even though the story is science fiction, it addresses the issue of minority groups and accepting people no matter their race, religion, political affiliation, etc. Eva and Addie confront multiple forms of conflict, both internal and external, and readers will relate to the struggles the girls face on their journey. The artwork for the book cover is also very eye-catching. Part of a face can be seen looking out ward at the viewer, while there's an outline of two faces in profile, emphasizing one body, two people. This story is a great read for anyone wanting a change of pace.
