It hurts when we are stung by a bee or slam our finger in a door, and we may yell OUCH! However, there are other moments that hurt also. Hearing someone call out a mean word, laughing when unkind things are said, or using ugly words to make another feel small are ‘ouch moments’. These words make people feel hurt inside.
When ouch words are said, we may not know what to do. In this book, children are given examples of things they could do when cruel words are spoken. Knowing what these moments are and that there is something we can do about them is important. Doing the right thing in ouch situations is not easy but it becomes easier with practice. The end of the book contains notes to parents and caregivers by Kevin L. Nadal, PhD, which explain macro-agressions; what to do, how to have open dialogues with children about these ouch moments and how to communicate when your child is the target or the facilitator.
