When the baby goes to bed he wants, "OUT!" and says so loudly several times. His best buddy and dog, JoJo, looks at him sympathetically, fetches his toy giraffe and drops it into the crib. The smart little boy climbs the giraffe and finds his way out of the crib. JoJo tries to sound the alarm but gets the firm command, "OUT!" himself. JoJo and the boy have a night of adventure until the boy falls asleep. JoJo carries him upstairs and crawls into the crib to sleep as well. Mom and Dad find a ruined cake and follow the frosting footsteps up to the sleeping pair.
This story is a wonderful nighttime ramble and adventure. The artwork carries the story and the words are almost non-existent and repetitive. For this reason children should be able to memorize the words easily and will enjoy "reading" this story to themselves and to others. The camaraderie between child and dog is tender and touching throughout the book. A wonderful moment is when the dog leans against the crib to offer comfort. The emotion is so expressive and sweet, especially through the illustration. The similarities between pet and child are reinforced in many images such as eating cake off the ground, crawling through the dog door and sitting together on the back porch watching the stars. This book belongs in the library of every child who has a pet.
