Pig the Pug by Aaron Blabey is a rhyming picture book about a pug who learns to share. Pig refuses to share with Trevor, a wiener dog who lives with Pig. He piles all his toys in a heap and climbs to the top, but it begins to fall and Pig falls out the window. Now, everything is different as Pig is wrapped up in a cast while he heals and learns to share.
The best part of this story is the rhyme and rhythm. It rolls off the tongue and is almost lyrical, like the poem "The Night Before Christmas." The illustrations are interesting because Pig is drawn to look particularly grotesque. The ending, as an adult, is unsatisfying in that Pig did not necessarily learn to share, he was forced to. There is a lesson of kindness that can be learned, however, from Trevor, who continues to share and be kind despite Pig's meanness.
