Lauren, or “Ren” as he likes to be called, moved just outside of his home town, although to him it feels like he moved much further. Being away from his friend Aiden, who starts hanging out with the "cool kids", Ren feels kind of lonely. One morning he notices that birds are falling out of the sky. Confused, Ren begins to investigate the bizarre birds and finds that his new neighbor, Sutton, is training pigeons to “roll” through the air for the World Cup. He is fascinated with her hobby and joins her in training the birds for the big event.

Darcy Miller does a fantastic job telling the story from an 11-year old perspective. Witty, hilarious, and cautious, Ren shares his experiences about the move and his friends. He learns to better understand himself as he becomes friends with Sutton, and that it’s okay to be the “King of the Geeks” and to just be yourself. This story is easily relateable for people around Ren’s age and would be perfect for elementary school teachers to read aloud to their middle-aged and older students. Be sure to also enjoy the bonus feature at the end for fun facts about pigeons!
