Being the illegitimate daughter of the King of the West has advantages and its messy disadvantages. Her beloved father is distant, favoring his legitimate daughters. Tillandra's fate is uncertain until her approaching eighteenth birthday when her father can choose to legitimize Tillandra. The visit of the princess of Lightspire, the ruling kingdom, seems like another snore-fest until she takes a special interest in the bastards. Innocently enough Tilla's fate spins irrevocably out of control and the fate of the kingdom hangs in the balance. In the climatic clash against the enemy, Tilla is able to save herself and her allies, providing them with a chance to warn the kingdom.

This is a page turner that readers will devour within a day. Her well-rounded characters are engaging and relatable, making readers feel like they are in the action along side the heroes. Their interactions with each other are entertaining and show diverse relationships. The scrapes and escapes are wonderfully compelling from one breathless page to the next. The courage and sacrifice of the characters for each other is heartwarming evidence that a family can be built from friends. Parents may be cautioned that there is some graphic material not suitable for all readers.
