Mushrooms grow from spores. Spores are like teeny tiny seeds. Before a spore can turn into a mushroom, it has to send out a type of root called hyphae to another spore. The two spores join and create a mushroom bud, a veil, and then the mushroom breaks through the veil and, when it is ready, makes its own spores.
This book has excellent photographs that support the text and clearly show the part of the process at any stage. While there is quite a bit of new vocabulary, there is a helpful glossary in the back if children don't understand what a word means from the text. From Spore to Mushroom has short, concise sentences that are easily understood and break the process into distinct, bitesize steps. Overall, this is a great book! Take this book along on a hike or walk to try and identify the different parts of a mushroom and the stages of their unique life cycle in nature.
