Eli, the dog, has been with Astrid ever since she came home from the hospital. They grew up in the same house, ate at the same table, and have been best friends from the time that Astrid was a little baby. They do everything together! As they grow older, Astrid realizes that Eli is getting old. For every birthday she celebrates, he celebrates six or seven. Astrid decides to make a bucket list of things that Eli should do before he gets too old. She takes him on a bike ride, to a movie, even to a fancy restaurant to get spaghetti and meatballs. In the end, she asks him if there’s anything else he wants to check off his bucket list, but his thoughts are, "No, I just want to be with you."
This book is perfect for dog lovers because it communicates the unique relationship that a dog owner has with their dog. Even if you’re not a dog lover, this story is sure to touch your heart with the tender love and friendship that is exhibited between Astrid and her dog Eli. Going beyond relationships with pets, this story can be applied to show that what really matters is spending time with those you love. Even though Astrid and Eli did a lot of fun things together, the only thing that was actually on Eli’s bucket list was being with Astrid. The drawings in this book are simple, but fitting, especially with Eli’s simple desire. This book is sure to warm your heart as you feel Astrid and Eli’s love for each other through the text and illustrations.
