When ten-year-old Bronte Mettlestone's parents are killed by pirates, Bronte must follow their legal will to the letter in order to save her village. According the the will, she must visit each of her aunts for a specified length of time and in a particular order. Before she moves on to the next aunt, she must leave a gift from her parents to each. She becomes acquainted with her family, discovers her abilities, makes wonderful friends, and has spectacular adventures. In the end she saves much, much more than one little village.
This is a fantastic tale in every way! Bronte is a very reasonable and practical young girl who is easy to love and root for because she is always genuine and brave and determined to complete her quest. The sprinkles of humor are consistent and keep the story lighthearted at all times. The pace is fast, but takes time for laughter and detail. This makes it an easy read and keeps the reader interested. Somehow the reader also cares about the quirky members of Bronte's family and her newfound friend. This is an absolute must-read.
