Marla Little's oversized pumpkin is out of control! As it rolls down the lane and into the town, people hear her cry, "Oh, diddle-dee-doo! Oh, what shall I do!" One by one they join in the chase, trying to capture the gargantuan gourd. It rolls past a farmer, a baker, a milkman, and a butcher who cannot quite catch it. The pernicious pumpkin finally rolls past the vegetable parade and into a cauldron just big enough to contain it, where it becomes a delicious pumpkin soup that feeds the hungry townsmen and women.

This is a cute story with wonderful graphics. Plenty of plump, helpful people with teeny-weeny legs or exaggerated bean poles chase the pumpkin and add humor to the tale. The illustrator uses a mixture of colors that give the images emphasis. The use of scale in the paintings is cheery, and the skew of the images on the page accentuates the movement. The illustrator has created a happy village of helpful, humorous characters that one would like to get to know better. This is a tale of delightful proportions with a cute story and wonderful artwork.
