When the children of the Vanderbeeker family hear that they have to move, they believe that if they can convince their landlord, Mr. Beiderman, to love them then maybe he will renew their lease. Without their parents' knowledge, they decide to do nice things for him. On Christmas morning, the children learn the truth behind why he wanted them to move and why he never left his apartment. It is then that the Vanderbeeker children offer to be his friend, and he accepts.
Karina Yan Glaser has written a lovely story, giving those feelings of “home” throughout the pages that not many stories accomplish. This story gives glimpses into the ups and downs of the Vanderbeekers, typical of any family. Children of many ages and parents are sure to relate to the Vanderbeekers' struggles, heartaches, and foibles. The Vanderbeekers can show you how to forgive, be kind when you don’t want to, make friends with someone you don’t even know, and much more.
