Winter is a contemporary sixteen-year-old girl guarding the wood from those who would misuse the time portals hidden throughout. Travelers who stumble through the portals are escorted carefully back to the proper place and time, a little confused but no worse for the wear. One day, a very determined Briton barrels through a portal determined to get by Winter and out of the woods. Winter repels him several times, until one day she listens to his story and risks her time and all history to help him complete his quest.
This was a very enjoyable read. The pace of the book maintains excitement and interest in the characters and in the story. It has many strengths among which the power of family ties, friendship, and duty are woven into a solid example for young women in the main character, Winter Parish. Even her romance with "Brightonshire" is carefully handled and ends the book with a simple kiss. On the downside, there is some pretty gruesome violence. If a reader is squeamish or frightens easily, one should pass on this book. On the other hand, if the reader enjoys a good shiver, this is a wonderful book to enjoy on a frosty Autumn night.
