This retelling of the children’s nursery rhyme is engaging, bright, and creative. It starts off with the well-known poem, and then continues with some fascinating new verses. At first, these follow the typical rhyme cadence, but then the story takes off and the toes go into wild, detailed, and adventurous activities. They go all over the world (even up to space) and use their superpowers, and then they are tired from their adventures and ready to go to bed.
During the beginning of the story when the classic rhyme is being told, the illustrations are the typical toes used for the telling of the nursery rhyme. However, when the story takes off into new rhymes, the illustrations become more colorful, breathtaking, and full of personality. Each toe, separated from a foot, engages in an activity. The story flows just as a day in the life of a child might—it holds imagination and excitement, but in the evening it’s time to wind down. The way the toes model having fun and then going to bed may help children as they prepare to sleep. The book also provides a link to download audio of the author singing the song. This story is hilarious, refreshing, and fun for readers, and will certainly keep them on their toes!
